THE UWI has introduced a new programme in Computing – the BSc in Software Engineering.
The four-year programme commenced this semester with a cohort of 30 students at the Mona Campus and eight at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados. The St Augustine campus is scheduled to come on board in the 2017-18 academic year. This is a 2+2 programme, which means that students are required to do the first two years of the programme here in the region and the final two in China. The programme is capped off by a six-month internship in the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) in China.
Qualifications for entry to the programme are two CAPE subjects in the Sciences, preferably including Mathematics.
The programme runs in collaboration with two institutions in China – the Zhou University and the Global Institute of Software Technology (GIST) – where the students spend the final two years of study.
At the end of the course, the possibility exists for students to get jobs in China to gain experience before they come back to Jamaica,” said Dr Ezra Mugisa, Head of the Department of Computing at The UWI, Mona.
UWI Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles conceptualised the programme while he was principal of the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados to address the need for Software Engineers in that country.
Mugisa also sees the programme as a solution to the dearth of Software Engineers in Jamaica. “We don’t produce enough Software Engineers in Jamaica. With the programme, we are hoping to generate a cadre of Software Engineers who will find employment in Jamaica, open up their own business and work anywhere in the world,” Mugisa said.
“The software industry is growing tremendously; we are hoping the course will have positive spinoffs for the economy here. We are also hoping to extend the course to the St Augustine campus next year,” he added.
